Dozens of iOS Apps Vulnerable to WiFi Snooping

Dozens of applications for Apple's mobile devices are vulnerable to WiFi snoopers, a security researcher reported this week. Will Strafach, CEO of the Sudo Security Group, identified 76 popular iOS apps available at Apple's App Store that were vulnerable to wireless eavesdroppers, even though the connections were supposed to be protected by encryption. There have been 18 million downloads of the vulnerable apps, he said. Strafach categorized 33 of the vulnerable apps as "low risk." Potentially intercepted information included partially sensitive analytics data about a device and partially sensitive personal data, such as an email address or login credentials. VivaVideo, Snap Upload for Snapchat, Volify, Loops Live, Private Browser, Aman Bank, FirstBank, VPN One Click Professional, and AutoLotto: Powerball, MegaMillions Lottery Tickets are some of the apps he assigned to the low-risk category. Riskier Apps Strafach categorized another 24 iOS apps as "

Apple cracks down on apps with 'free' in the name

Apple is making more moves to clean up its App Store.  After cracking down on outdated apps, the company is now placing restrictions on how developers describe their apps. Apple is now rejecting updated and new app submissions that have the word "free" in the name,  VentureBeat   reports . "Your app’s name, icons, screenshots, or previews to be displayed on the App Store include references to your app’s price," Apple reportedly pointed out.   "Please remove any references to your app’s price from your app’s name, including any references to your app being free or discounted." Apple has yet to comment on the change other than to confirm its existence but the policy change is yet another sign Cupertino is looking to clean up its App Store. The company is also cracking down on outdated apps that haven't been optimized for newer iPhones and iPads, which could include as many as 200,000 apps. That's in addition to the 47,000 apps Apple

Google is destroying Apple in the app game — except where it counts

Android is dominating app stores but Apple is still beating Google in one extremely important metric: revenue. Cupertino made nearly twice as much money from its App Store in 2017 as Google did from Google Play, despite seeing only a fraction of the downloads, according to  a new report  out today from App Annie. Just how big is the difference? Apple made $34 billion on 29 billion app downloads in 2016, according to the company's data. Google, by comparison, made $10 billion on 63 billion downloads in 2016.  Put another way, Apple made  more than three times as much money  as Google with  less than half  as many downloads.  While data has long shown that iOS users are more likely to pay for apps than their Android-using counterparts, there's a China-sized reason for the disparity. Because Google Play doesn't have a presence in China, third-party app stores — like those from Baidu and Xiaomi — dominate the market, even though Apple's China business is gr

Marriott Rewards's new Snapchat ad is a dream come true for the app

Hotel chains aren't really cool. They have cool stuff to offer, like free wi-fi and swimming pools, but if you're a young traveler on a budget, you might be looking more to services like Airbnb.  Marriott isn't ready to concede that, so they're going after millennials on their own turf: Snapchat. The goal is to convince these travelers via Snapchat that Marriott Rewards is a program worthy of their fickle love.  Marriott on Thursday released the first of four "snapisodes," the term they're using to describe advertisements they have created for Snapchat. This isn't just your typical Snap ad, which is more often a 10-second video clip or a swipe up to a website or movie trailer. These are three-minute, influencer-filled productions meant to capture teen eyeballs while also proving their dedication to Snapchat. Marriott Rewards's effort is pretty much a dream come true for Snapchat. Previously, media partners, like  Mashable  and TV stud

Dating app figures out what we all hate about sex

When it comes to what we love and what we hate about sex, the dating app Hater has got our number. The app, which  launched in February  and matches people based on what they both hate, isn't just for helping people find love. Their users can swipe through more than 3,000 topics to indicate if they love them or hate them, and thus it's become a great source of data on how people feel about all kinds of things — including sex.  Hater analyzed responses to sex-related topics and found that the biggest disagreements between men and women were about “butt stuff.” Even though it’s now been endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP, only 48 percent of women were in favor of it. In contrast, 88 percent of men were on board. Sorry, guys.  Following closely behind (sorry) was the topic of threesomes, which only 43 percent of ladies were into. Not surprisingly, men were more on board, with 81 percent in favor of them. After that it was one night stands (only 33 percent of women ar
