The Galaxy S8's iris scanner fixes the one thing that made it suck on the Note 7

One of the coolest features from the Galaxy Note 7 (RIP) is back and better on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

I'm, of course, talking about the Note 7's iris scanner. Samsung introduced the iris scanner on the Note 7 as an alternative way to secure the phone, but it wasn't without its flaws.

Fast as it was, activating the iris scanner was kind of a pain in the ass. Allow me to quote myself:

"I found it faster to unlock the phone with a fingerprint than waking up the phone, swiping to bring up the iris scanner/PIN (or pattern)/fingerprint unlock screen then getting my eyes scanned."

And:

"...it sometimes had trouble detecting my smaller eyes, asking me to "open eyes fully," and reflections in my glasses always interfered with the scans."

Samsung's fixed this complicated three-step process on the S8 and S8+.

First, it's now only two steps: Wake the phone up by pressing the power button or virtual home button and then look into the IR sensor on the top bezel. No more, swiping up to bring up the iris scanner preview/PIN lock screen.

Second, you don't even need to have the iris scanner preview window any more, which means you don't need to try to line up your eyes with the two circles on the screen. By disabling the iris preview, the iris scanner is now actually useful.

Weirdly enough, Samsung's added a bunch of different cartoony faces that you can select instead of the standard two circles. So you can set up the iris scanner like this:

New photos show Tesla's massive Nevada factory is coming along

'Guess we shouldn't be too surprised that the what's going to be world's largest factory...continues to get larger. Tesla's Gigafactory, a gleaming white structure amid the muted browns surrounding Reno, Nevada, seems to be coming along, according to photos snapped by NM Group, a company that describes itself as specializing in "surveying and mapping, asset modeling and management, and engineering." The group was recently mapping the area for potential power lines on behalf of an electricity company, according to Tim Hustwayte, a senior client manager based in the United Kingdom. The route took them close to the Gigafactory, and they got some shots that appear to show the factory having bulked up since Tesla's battery cell began rolling off production lines at the start of the year. The Gigafactory employed nearly 3,000 people at the start of the year, less than half of how many people are expected to be employed there...

You can now book fitness classes on Google

Google just released its latest service to the world: a website that could help you get fit all while filling empty fitness studios around the world. Reserve with Google is a new feature that lets you see and book fitness classes in the U.S. It was previously only available in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The site pulls together Google Maps and Google Search and puts them into a new Reserve with Google website (on desktop and mobile). Think Google Flights ( google.com/flights ) except this is for transforming your body rather than transporting it. You can search for fitness studios based on location and style.
